Business Development Manager – Rail

Location: London

Salary: £55k - £65k plus up to 25% bonus, plus £6k car allowance plus private health care and pension scheme

Start: ASAP

Business Development Manager required with a background of bidding into the Rail industry, to join our clients team based in London. The BD Manager will actively identify, develop and secure significant new business opportunities in the rail sector in order to meet target growth. Substantial experience of bidding and contract winning in the Rail and related sectors in a leading role and demonstrably strong project management and administrative experience working to tight deadlines and budgets is required. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant Rail policy, legislation, compliance and accreditation requirements. The successful candidate will support the Directors in developing the forward business plan to build a substantial portfolio in the UK in the area of the Rail industry.

The Role:

  • Using existing sector contacts and by developing new contacts to identify opportunities within the sector and build strong and positive relationships with both potential and existing clients.
  • Develop own expertise in the rail sector and mentor and develop staff to improve sector knowledge and competitive advantage.
  • To carry out research and investigation into Rail sectors / projects within the UK to identify opportunities and ensure that you are abreast of all relevant developments and policies in the sector.
  • To actively lead bids, developing and managing consortium to strict deadlines and against plan. To include the arrangement of all pre bid agreements and drive the effective and efficient administration and project management of compelling and competitive bids.
  • To manage the in house bid team and co-ordinate with other teams within the group to secure resource to effectively deliver the bid. Working effectively to secure planned growth with other members of the Business Development Team and supporting growth in other sectors.
  • Take full responsibility for the submission of the tender in compliance with the Client’s requirements including management of the document production resources/ team.
  • Develop bid budget in consultation with Directors for both development programme and individual bids. Take responsibility for ensuring that all activities are delivered against budget and are beneficial and secure commercial arrangements are established with all partners. Monitoring expenditure and reporting against budget.
  • Work within and contribute to the improvement of existing business development and bidding procedures and quality systems. Preparing and presenting project reports, budget and business updates as required.
  • Develop innovative solutions and business benefits to provide competitive edge within the Rail market and associated sectors. To include the development of cost and value benefit analysis for new business propositions and the identification and securing of key strategic partners.

Essential Requirements:

  • Substantial experience of bidding and contract winning in the Rail and related sectors in a leading role.
  • Demonstrably strong project management and administrative experience working to tight deadlines and budgets.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant Rail policy, legislation, compliance and accreditation requirements.
  • Experience in carrying out relevant in depth research and able to produce concise and informative reports, business plans and briefings.
  • Strong team working experience in a matrix management environment.
  • Experience of Microsoft Office including Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook and Project.

Desirable:

  • Operational experience in a Rail context.
  • Knowledge of PPP, PFI and investment finance.
  • Experience of preparing tender documentation.
  • Experience of the use of web based collaboration tools such as Asite, E-Box, Buzzsaw or Sharepoint.

  • A strong customer care focus with the tenacity to identify client requirements and deliver contract winning solutions that delight the customer and provide quality margin to the business.

This position will require considerable flexibility in both working hours and location. The role will require extensive travel within the UK including working away from home
